From Vietnam to Germany: The First Leap

Moving from Vietnam to Germany wasn’t just a physical relocation: it was a shift in how I experienced the world and myself. I arrived not knowing what the next day would bring, with shaky German and an open heart.

I didn’t come here chasing comfort. I came here chasing growth. And growth doesn’t come easy.

Doing Things I Never Thought I Would

Living in Germany has pushed me to do things I never imagined:

  • Buying second-hand everything, from kitchen tools to clothes, and eventually, a bike that carried me across the city.
  • Choosing to spend less, questioning every purchase, and learning that less truly is more.
  • Doing things alone: my first solo trips, handling bureaucracy in German, walking into unfamiliar spaces and introducing myself.
  • Cycling to work under rain and shine – a version of me I hadn’t met before.
  • Traveling to another city just to pick up a second-hand bike, because I couldn’t afford a new one.
  • Having that same bike stolen, and feeling heartbroken like I’d lost a dear friend.
  • Taking an ambulance ride alone, scared but somehow calm, because I knew I could handle it.

Moments of Getting Lost – Literally and Figuratively

There were days I was completely lost – in both the physical and emotional sense. I’ve stood in the middle of nowhere, no people around, no signal, with only a few German words and a blurry sense of direction.

But in those moments, I also found something else: my ability to adapt, to ask for help, to keep going.

Learning to Let Go and Start Again

In this journey, I’ve had to let go of what I thought life “should” look like and embrace what it is.
There’s been failure, frustration, and loneliness. But also kindness from strangers, small wins, and a growing sense of belonging not to a place, but to myself.

What This Journey Has Taught Me

  • That growth looks messy before it looks beautiful.
  • That bravery isn’t loud. You know, sometimes, it’s just waking up and trying again.
  • That not having everything figured out is okay.

And most importantly, that building something meaningful often starts with breaking old patterns and stepping into the unknown.

Phuong Dong Haus: A New Chapter

This website, Phuong Dong Haus, is a continuation of that journey. A place where personal meets professional. Where my experience as a freelancer, creative, and immigrant becomes something I can share. To support others who are building their own digital homes in unfamiliar places.

Whether you’re a small business owner, a fellow expat, or someone figuring it out as you go, I hope this space offers you clarity, creativity, and connection.

The journey has only just begun. And I’m glad you’re here for it.
